I have looked for the plans/parts list for using ibc totes and can't find any.  Where are they?In aquaponics 101 it looks like the system is outside.  It does not say what type of fish are being…Continue

Not sure if this is where I should post this, but I had a question regarding Aquaponics.  My plan is to start with one 300 or 275 gallon ibc container for the fish and to do a raised bed somewhere around 8x10.  My questions are:  Am I starting too big?  If not, is my flower bed big enough?  Lastly, is there a rule of thumb as to how many fish per gallon, or per sq.ft of flower bed?  Thanks in advance, and I love the videos you guys have posted.

Clayton, this is a great spot to post about aquaponics, both here and in the forums. Generally the more water you have the more stable your system will be.  So this is not to big at all.   With a good system you can grow 1lb of fish to / 1 gallon of water.  But I would try starting out much less for your first harvest.

Do you guys have any books or dvds available,  or do you recommend a particular book?  I'm sort of a research guy before I take the plunge.  Of all the videos and stuff I've seen and read online I definitely like you guys' setup out of all of them.  Plus I think it's a much needed thing what you guys are doing and I wanna support that by getting anything I can from you guys like fish and whatever else is available.  Thanks for responding so quick by the way.

I am also looking at a 300 gallon fish tank.  My question is about the pump.  I have read that with a 300 gallon system my pump needs to be 1,000gph.  Do you have any suggestions on where to purchase pumps and what type?

Do I have to have a filter or is it just recommended?  If so, does it need to go before or after the fish tank?

Clayton, potentially your growbeds can serve as a good filter as long as your ratios are within range.  Most small scale aquaponics systems do not require a separate filter.

Cool, thanks Jason.

I am the least 'handy' person in the whole world.  For me it's easier to build raft systems with a solids/swirl filter between the fish and the raft beds.  For some reason, in my ineptitude, I can't get flood and drain to work.  So I stick with what does.  I also build some water lines out to self watering containers and wicking beds and use fish water for those.  Someday, I'll figure our that auto siphon thing....

Do I put the seeds right into the grow bed? @Jason; does your water flow from your fish tanks, through the filters, then to the grow beds? I thought I saw water being pumped into the fish tanks from some black hose. If thats correct where is it comming from? Could you please give me short discription of your water flow? Thanks -Toby.

Jason will be better able to describe their filtration, but we start our plants in seed trays and transplant them into our aquaponics units.  I have heard of people planting things like green beans as seeds right in their grow bed depending on the media.  I did that once a few years back in hydroponic system suing a mix of vermiculite and pearlite.  The  beans did fine.  I tried cabbage as well with poor results.
