"You can buy reconditioned IBCs, and they will specifically say what is safe to put in them. As discussed, there's a reason you can't put food into a cleaned tank thats had chemicals in it. It's much safer to buy a food grade tank and…"

"I'm getting them for $70 each, which was much cheaper than the other source in Madison, Alabama, which wanted $125 each for them.  I'm also spending less in gas to get them."

"Awesome!  Glad to hear it Adam.  Are they "free" or at least cheap enough to make them reasonable?  Either way, glad you came up with a source for totes!"

"WOO HOO!!  FINALLY found a local source of food grade totes!!  I thought it would never happen.  The guy is about an hour from me and has totes that held a syrup used in making salad dressing."

"When my pond was first dug we would catch bass and crappies from different lakes and put them in the pond to stock it. The idea was that they would reproduce. The reason that I have sunnys is because I dumped some live bait in there that had sunnys…"

"The unwanted fish from your pond should do just great in an aquaponics system.  Any fresh water fish can work, from goldfish on up.. I'd probably opt for the fish that required less work for heating or cooling…"

"Good to know thank you. I have heard that walleye are also very difficult because of cannibalism. Not being one who likes to eat fish, sunnys are readily available and free. I can also get a worm farm going to feed them cheap... Or just…"

"Eric-   The sunnys and bass are a good fish for aquaponics if you are in the colder part of the States.  Trout on the other hand, like you say, may be a bit more challenging.  Not only are they a cold water fish but they also need a…"

"It is interesting that you say that. I have not set up a system yet as I am still in the research phase but I was planning to use mostly sunfish and bass because I can catch them out of my pond. I really don't want the sunny's in the pond…"

"...gosh, I am repeating myself.... the cancer fatigue, depleting my energy and recent med changes could have something to do with that but frankly, a little redundancy is the last thing I am worried about."

"t-   Many people grow Tilapia in their aquaponics systems because of the fast growth.  Here in Wisconsin, most commercial setups do use tilapia because they are a big portion of the income brought into the business BUT, because of the…"

"Not sure if it's been mentioned but I talked to a guy from my own state of Oklahoma about keeping the water acclimated for Talapia, since this was the only fish I've heard of people raising in an aquapoinics environment.... He raises…"

"Usually you can get a hold of an old un-used above ground swimming pool for a song and a dance and a good show of your harry legs (some people are into that sort of thing).  Then use the liner to line your fish tank and grow beds. Just a…"

"What Leo said. Although by the time you buy expensive pond liner or liquid rubber or epoxy to line something, you'd be spending quite a bit.  No worries if you can afford it, but before I went that route, I'd get an inexpensive above…"

"Now  With that all said from my last post, if you have done your best to find food grade IBCs and absolutly can't find any, don't let this stop you from building an IBC aquaponic system, you do have options. 1. you can line the tote…"

"With aquaponics, your growing season is usually lengthened a few weeks.  Because as Mark said the temperature of the root zone plays a hugh part here.  As long as you can keep the frost off the plants the air around them staying warmer…"
